The technician does not clamp on and hope. A voltmeter goes on the battery first, because the reading tells us what we are dealing with: around 12 volts is a battery that was simply drained, while 10.5 volts or less usually means a dead cell that no boost will fix for long. Terminals are checked for corrosion and looseness, then a lithium booster pack or heavy cables go on in the right order, positive first and the negative to a solid earth point. A jump start is enough when there is a clear reason for the flat: lights or a door left on, the car parked for three weeks during a trip abroad, a dashcam running in parking mode.
