Toyota battery replacement in Al Taawun

Most Toyota cars take a Japanese-size (JIS) maintenance-free battery: a small NS40 or NS60 class unit on a Yaris or Corolla, a 55D23L on a Camry, and an 80D26 or 95D31 on a Land Cruiser, Prado or Hilux. Nearly all of them sit under the bonnet, so a technician can change one where the car is parked in Al Taawun, usually in under half an hour.

Toyota battery sizes and types

Toyota sizes follow the JIS code printed on the label. Yaris and smaller Corolla engines usually carry an NS40 or NS60 class battery, the B20 and B24 cases. Camry, RAV4 and larger Corolla engines step up to 55D23L or 75D23L. Fortuner, Prado, Hilux and petrol Land Cruiser models normally use an 80D26, with 95D31 or 105D31 on diesels and heavily loaded cars. Some recent Toyota platforms have switched to European-style DIN cases, so the technician reads the fitted battery or the chassis number before picking one off the van.

How the battery and charging system work on a Toyota

Toyota keeps its charging system simple. On most petrol models sold in the Gulf there is no battery sensor to code and no start-stop, so a good flooded maintenance-free battery of the right size is exactly what the car was built for. The exceptions are the hybrids, where a small 12V auxiliary battery wakes the computers before the high-voltage pack takes over, and a few recent models with a current sensor on the negative clamp. Because nothing has to be registered, the job is mostly about matching case size, terminal layout and cranking power.

Signs a Toyota battery is on its way out

  • The engine turns over lazily on the first start of the day, then seems fine by the afternoon. On a Toyota that slow morning crank is often the only warning you get.
  • The clock or trip meter resets itself overnight, or a smart-key car lights the dash but will not crank.
  • On a hybrid, the READY light never comes on even though the hybrid battery gauge shows charge. That is the small 12V battery, not the hybrid pack.

What we watch for when fitting a Toyota battery

  • The last letter of the size code, L or R, says which side the positive post sits on. Fit the wrong hand and the cables will not reach, so it is checked before the old battery comes out.
  • Small Toyota batteries in the B19, B20 and B24 cases have thinner posts than the D23, D26 and D31 sizes. A bigger battery cannot simply be clamped on in their place.
  • A memory saver is plugged in during the swap so the clock, radio presets and one-touch windows keep their settings. If a window does lose its auto function, holding the switch up for a few seconds after it closes brings it back.
  • Diesel Land Cruisers and some diesel Hilux and Prado versions carry two batteries. They are changed as a matched pair, same size, brand and age, or the new one gets dragged down by the old.

Where the battery sits in a Toyota

Every mainstream petrol Toyota has the battery under the bonnet, at a front corner, held down by a metal bar and two long J-hooks. That makes it one of the quickest cars to work on in a tight basement bay: the technician only needs room to lift the bonnet and stand at one front wing. Hybrids are different. On the Camry Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid the 12V battery is at the back, behind a boot side panel or in the luggage area, so the boot has to be emptied and the car needs space behind it.

Toyota battery help around Al Taawun

A large share of Al Taawun residents drive to Dubai every morning, and a lot of them do it in a Corolla, Camry or Yaris. The crawl onto Al Ittihad Road between 7 and 9am, then back between 5 and 8pm, keeps the engine near idle with the AC working hard, which charges the battery slowly and cooks it under the bonnet. Land Cruisers and Prados have the opposite problem: many sit in the tower basement all week and only come out at the weekend. Both habits end the same way, usually on a hot morning.

Toyota battery replacement: FAQs

Why does my Land Cruiser diesel have two batteries?

A big diesel needs far more current to turn over than a petrol engine, so Toyota fits two batteries that share the load. They age together, which is why both are replaced at once with an identical pair. Mixing one new battery with one old one shortens the life of the new one.

Where is the 12V battery on a Camry Hybrid?

It is in the boot behind a side trim panel, not under the bonnet. It is a small sealed battery that only powers the computers and relays, while the hybrid pack does the actual starting. If the car will not go to READY, this is the battery that gets tested and changed, and it can be done in your parking bay.

Is an NS60 the same as a 46B24 battery?

Yes. NS60 is the older trade name and 46B24 is the current JIS code for the same case. An L on the end means the positive post is on the opposite side, and an S means thicker standard posts, so those letters have to match what your Corolla or Yaris already has.

My Corolla needs a jump start every few mornings. Is the battery finished?

Almost certainly. A battery that needs a jump start more than once has usually lost its capacity, and in Sharjah heat it does not come back. The technician tests the battery and the alternator first, free of charge, so you know it is not a charging fault before anything is fitted.
