Panasonic: strengths and trade-offs

Where it does well

  • JIS sizing throughout, so fit on Japanese cars is exact, including the small sizes with thin posts.
  • A long original-equipment relationship with Japanese car makers.
  • EFB types in the special sizes that Japanese idling-stop systems use.
  • Sealed maintenance-free construction with nothing to top up between services.

Where to think twice

  • No AGM in our Panasonic stock, so cars built with AGM, and some hybrid auxiliary batteries, get another brand.
  • Few European DIN sizes, so it rarely suits German, French or American cars.
  • A Japanese name does not always mean made in Japan; check the label if the country of manufacture matters to you.

Who makes Panasonic batteries

Panasonic is one of Japan's best-known electronics names, and that name has been on car batteries for decades. Japanese car makers have long used Panasonic batteries as original equipment, so plenty of Toyota and Honda owners find it on the battery their car was delivered with. Panasonic-brand car batteries are produced in Asia, and the plant varies by market. The country of manufacture is on the label, and we are happy to show it to you before fitting.

The range follows the Japanese Industrial Standard, the size system with codes such as 55D23L that describe performance, case size and terminal side in a single string. That sounds like a small detail, but it is the whole reason the brand works so well on Japanese cars: the battery drops into the tray, the clamp reaches, and the posts are the right thickness for the car's terminals. No spacers, no stretched cables, nothing pressing against the bonnet lining.

Which cars suit a Panasonic battery

Panasonic is for owners of Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Mazda and Subaru cars who want a Japanese-brand battery in the size the car was designed around. Corolla, Camry and Civic commuters, Land Cruiser and Lexus owners who keep their cars for years, and Mazda drivers with i-stop all fall into that group. If the car is a hybrid or was built with AGM, mention it when you call, as we will bring a different brand.

How Panasonic batteries cope with UAE heat

Japanese cars are fairly easy on batteries: modest electrical loads, sensible charging, and a battery that usually sits at a front corner of the engine bay. Heat still sets the clock. Expect about 2 to 3 years in typical UAE private use, and nearer the low end for a car that covers a few kilometres a day around Al Taawun with the AC on full. Idling-stop Mazda and Subaru models should stay on EFB, which stands up to repeated restarts in traffic far better than a standard battery.

Panasonic compared with other brands

  • Panasonic vs Amaron

Amaron is widely fitted to Japanese cars in the UAE and comes in flooded, EFB and AGM. Panasonic appeals to owners who want a Japanese name with factory-fit history. On fit and expected life in our heat they are close; cars built with AGM go to Amaron.

  • Panasonic vs Solite

Solite is Korean, built in the same JIS sizes, and often comes out as the more economical quote. Panasonic is the choice when the owner prefers a Japanese brand on a Toyota or Lexus. Both are sealed and maintenance-free, so it comes down to preference and stock.

Panasonic car battery: FAQs

Is Panasonic the original battery on Toyota and Honda cars?

Panasonic has long supplied batteries to Japanese car makers, so many cars were delivered with one, but not every model or market. Cars sold new in the Gulf may have left the factory with a different brand. The technician checks the battery in your car and matches size, capacity and terminal layout.

What does a code like 55D23L on a Panasonic battery mean?

It is the JIS size code. The first number is a performance rating, the letter gives the case width and height class, the next number is the length in centimetres and the last letter shows which side the terminals are on. Matching that code is how the technician makes sure the new battery fits the tray and cables.

Can Panasonic be fitted to my Toyota or Lexus hybrid?

Usually not from our stock. Hybrid auxiliary batteries are often a special AGM type, mounted in the boot or cabin with a vent tube, and we do not carry Panasonic in AGM. Tell us the model and we bring the correct battery from another brand.

What warranty comes with a Panasonic car battery in Al Taawun?

Up to 24 months from fitting, with the term in writing on the invoice. Battery delivery, fitting at the car and the test beforehand are all free, and the old battery goes for recycling.
