Geely battery replacement in Al Taawun

A Geely takes a DIN-size battery, usually 45 to 80 Ah. The Emgrand uses a standard maintenance-free type, while turbo models with start-stop such as the Coolray, Tugella and Monjaro need EFB or AGM. The battery is under the bonnet on all of them, so it can be tested and replaced where the car stands in Al Taawun, Sharjah, at any hour.

What we watch for when fitting a Geely battery

  • The battery sensor clamp on the negative post is easy to crack if levered off. It is released at its own bolt, never pulled by the cable.
  • A memory keeper is used on the Monjaro and Tugella during the swap so seat memory, the clock and saved driver settings are not lost.
  • After the change, start-stop usually stays off for a few drives while the sensor relearns the new battery. That is expected and it comes back by itself.
  • On mild-hybrid Okavango and Azkarra versions only the 12V battery is disconnected. The 48V unit stays plugged in and is never jump started or charged from our equipment.

How the battery and charging system work on a Geely

The Tugella and Monjaro sit on a platform developed with Volvo, and the electrical side shows it: a battery monitoring sensor on the negative terminal, smart alternator charging, and start-stop on the turbo engines. Charging voltage rises and falls on purpose as the car decides when to charge, so a reading at the terminals that moves around is not a fault by itself. Some Okavango and Azkarra versions add a 48V mild-hybrid system with its own separate battery. That part is not something we replace; the 12V battery beside it is.

Signs a Geely battery is on its way out

  • The push-button start lights the dash but the engine gives a short stutter and stops, often after the car has sat in the sun all day.
  • The Coolray's dual-clutch gearbox can show a warning or shift roughly right after a weak start, then behave once the voltage has recovered.
  • The cluster shows a low battery or power-saving message and the screen shuts down sooner than usual once the engine is off.

Where the battery sits in a Geely

Geely puts the 12V battery under the bonnet, on one side of the engine bay, usually beneath a plastic cover with the fuse and relay box next to it. The Monjaro and Tugella pack the bay tightly, so an air duct or cover section normally comes off first. None of this needs the car moved or lifted. In a basement the technician needs the bonnet up and about a door's width beside one front wing; on a podium deck in summer the work is done quickly, because the bay and the old battery are both very hot.

Geely battery sizes and types

The Emgrand, with its 1.5 litre non-turbo engine, usually takes a 45 to 60 Ah flooded battery. The Coolray's three-cylinder turbo normally has start-stop and a 60 to 70 Ah EFB or AGM. The Tugella and Monjaro, both 2.0 turbo, usually sit at 70 to 80 Ah and should be treated as AGM cars unless the fitted battery says otherwise. Okavango and Azkarra batteries depend on whether the car is a mild hybrid. For every Geely the technician reads the label on the old battery and matches type, capacity and terminal side.

Geely battery help around Al Taawun

July and August highs in Sharjah sit around 42 to 43 C, and a Geely on an open podium deck or in a street bay off Al Taawun Street soaks in that all day. Battery chemistry ages roughly twice as fast for every 10 C rise, so the damage is done in summer even when the failure shows up in a cooler month. Late-summer nights by Khalid Lagoon are humid as well as hot, so the engine bay never cools. A free test before June gives a fair idea of how much life yours has left for the season.

Geely battery replacement: FAQs

Does my Geely have one battery or two?

Most have one 12V battery under the bonnet. Okavango and Azkarra versions with the 48V mild-hybrid system carry a second, separate battery for that system. We test and replace the 12V battery; the 48V unit is a dealer item.

My Geely was fine yesterday and dead after a day in the sun. Is it the heat?

Heat is the usual cause, though the damage was done over months, not in one afternoon. High temperatures speed up corrosion inside the battery and dry out the cells, and a battery already near the end gives up after a hot soak. A test confirms it and checks the alternator too, so the new battery is not blamed for another fault.

Can a Geely Coolray take an AGM battery instead of EFB?

Yes. A car built with EFB can be upgraded to AGM, which copes better with heat and frequent restarts. It cannot go the other way to a standard battery, which fails early and switches the start-stop off.

Why does my Geely switch its screen off so quickly when I wait with the engine off?

The car is protecting the battery. With the engine off, the screens, fans and lights run from the 12V battery alone, and the car shuts them down once the charge falls to a set level. If that happens within a few minutes, the battery is weak and should be tested.
