Volkswagen battery replacement in Al Taawun
A Volkswagen with start-stop takes an EFB or AGM battery in a European case size, usually 59 to 70 Ah on a Golf or Jetta and up to 95 or 105 Ah on a Touareg. Most sit under the bonnet in an insulating jacket. Fitting and the battery adaptation that newer VWs need are both done where the car is parked in Al Taawun.

Volkswagen battery sizes and types
The Golf and Jetta usually take an H5 or H6 case, 59 to 70 Ah, in EFB or AGM where start-stop is fitted and standard flooded where it is not. The Tiguan normally uses an H6 at around 68 to 70 Ah. The Passat sold in the Gulf and the Teramont usually take an H6 or H7 of 70 to 80 Ah. The Touareg needs the most, typically 95 to 105 Ah AGM. VW prints capacity and technology on the battery label, and the technician fits like for like unless you ask to upgrade EFB to AGM.

Volkswagen models we replace batteries for
Tap a model for its battery type, where it sits and what the swap involves.
Volkswagen GolfA Golf usually takes a 59 to 70 Ah battery, EFB or AGM on start-stop cars, which includes most recent GTI and R models. It sits under the bonnet in its jacket, and recent generations need adaptation.
Volkswagen TiguanThe Tiguan normally uses an H6 battery of about 68 to 70 Ah, AGM on most second-generation cars. The air intake ducting over the battery comes off first, which adds a few minutes.
Volkswagen PassatPassats sold in the Gulf usually take a 70 Ah class battery under the bonnet. Older 2.5 litre cars often have a standard flooded type and no sensor; newer turbo models with start-stop need EFB or AGM and adaptation.
Volkswagen TouaregOn most Touaregs the battery is under the left front seat and is a 95 to 105 Ah AGM. The seat has to move under power to reach it, so we connect a supply at the jump posts first.
Volkswagen JettaThe Jetta is the easiest VW here: a 60 Ah class battery under the bonnet, standard flooded on older cars without start-stop and EFB on later ones. Many older Jettas need no adaptation at all.
Volkswagen TeramontThe Teramont's size and three rows call for a 70 to 80 Ah AGM battery in most versions, mounted under the bonnet. Start-stop is fitted to most of them, so a standard battery is not an option.

How the battery and charging system work on a Volkswagen
Volkswagen splits into two eras. Older Golf, Jetta and Passat models without a battery sensor take a new battery and carry on. Cars with start-stop, and most built in the last decade, have a battery data module on the negative terminal and want the replacement adapted with a diagnostic tool so charging matches the new battery. Brake energy recuperation means the alternator charges hardest when you lift off and holds back at other times. DSG gearboxes and electric steering are sensitive to low voltage, so a weak battery often shows up as a gearbox or steering warning first.
Signs a Volkswagen battery is on its way out
- A DSG car hesitates or thumps into gear on the first pull-away, or flashes the gear indicator, after a slow start.
- The dash shows a start-stop error or a 'start engine manually' message at traffic lights.
- The multifunction display shows a low battery warning, or the clock and trip data have reset themselves overnight.
What we watch for when fitting a Volkswagen battery
- The thermal jacket around the battery goes back on. It shields the case from engine heat, and leaving it off in a Sharjah summer shortens the battery's life.
- After reconnecting, the steering and ESP lights usually stay on until the wheel has been turned lock to lock and the car driven a few metres. That is normal on a VW.
- Adaptation writes the new battery's capacity, technology and serial data into the car. On models with a battery data module this is done every time, even for a like-for-like swap.
- One-touch windows are reset by holding each switch up for a couple of seconds at the top. On the Touareg the seat is returned to its usual position once the battery cover is back.

Where the battery sits in a Volkswagen
Golf, Jetta, Tiguan, Passat and Teramont batteries are under the bonnet on the left side, wrapped in a fabric or plastic thermal jacket and clamped at the foot. On several models the air filter housing or an intake pipe overlaps the battery and comes off first. The Touareg is the exception: on most of them the battery lives under the left front seat, which has to be slid and tilted to reach it. Under-bonnet jobs need little room. For a Touareg the front door must open wide, so a basement bay beside a pillar can be tight.
Volkswagen battery help around Al Taawun
Living at the Dubai border has a catch for a Volkswagen owner whose usual workshop is across the line. A car that will not start in a Sharjah basement at 6pm would otherwise need a recovery truck through Al Ittihad Road at its worst, since the road is jammed from 5 to 8pm. Because fitting and adaptation are done in the parking bay, the car stays where it is and is ready for the next morning's commute. If the test shows the fault is not the battery, recovery to a partner workshop can be booked for a quieter hour.
Volkswagen battery replacement: FAQs
Does every Volkswagen need battery adaptation?
No. Older models without a battery sensor on the negative terminal, including many earlier Jetta and Passat cars, need nothing after a swap. Cars with start-stop or a battery data module do, and the technician can tell which yours is by looking at the negative terminal.
Why are the steering and ESP lights on after my VW battery was disconnected?
The steering angle sensor lost its reference when power was cut. Turning the wheel fully left and right and driving a short distance in a straight line usually clears both lights. If they stay on, the fault memory is read with the scan tool.
Can a weak battery make a DSG gearbox behave badly?
Yes. The mechatronic unit and its pump rely on steady voltage, and a battery that sags during and after cranking can cause harsh engagement or a flashing gear display. Test the battery before assuming the gearbox is at fault; it is the quicker and simpler check.
Where is the battery on a Volkswagen Touareg?
On most Touaregs it is under the left front seat, not under the bonnet. There are jump start posts in the engine bay for boosting. Replacement means moving the seat and lifting a floor cover, all of which is done on site.
