Audi battery replacement in Al Taawun
Nearly every recent Audi takes an AGM or EFB start-stop battery, from about 60 Ah in an A3 to around 105 Ah in a Q7 or Q8, and it has to be coded to the car's energy management. Both jobs are done where the car is parked in Al Taawun: fitting in the boot, under a seat or under the bonnet, then coding with a scan tool.

How the battery and charging system work on a Audi
Audi runs the battery through an energy management module that tracks its age, capacity and charge from a sensor on the negative terminal. When the battery weakens, the module switches off comfort features in stages, such as seat climate and then the infotainment, to save enough for a start. A new battery must be written into that module with its capacity, technology and serial data, or the car keeps charging it as if it were the old one. Recent A6, Q7 and Q8 models also carry a 48V mild-hybrid system, which is separate from the 12V battery we replace.
Signs a Audi battery is on its way out
- The MMI shows a low battery message asking you to start the engine, or shuts itself down after a few minutes with the ignition on.
- Start-stop has not worked for weeks and comfort functions drop out one at a time, starting with seat climate or the rear demister.
- The electric boot lid or keyless entry works on some days and not others, especially after the car has stood for a weekend.
Where the battery sits in a Audi
Where the battery sits depends on the Audi. The A3 has it under the bonnet. The A4, A6 and Q5 carry it in the boot under the floor panel, beside or beneath the spare wheel well, with a vent tube leading outside. On the Q7 and Q8 it is under a front seat or under the boot floor, depending on generation. A boot battery needs the tailgate open and the load floor emptied, so a car reversed hard against a basement wall may have to come forward a metre before work can start.
Audi models we replace batteries for
Tap a model for its battery type, where it sits and what the swap involves.
Audi A4The A4 keeps its battery in the boot under the floor on recent generations and usually takes a 70 to 80 Ah AGM. Coding is required, and the vent tube must be refitted to the new battery.
Audi A6An A6 usually takes an 80 to 95 Ah AGM in the boot, beneath the floor panel. Newer mild-hybrid cars add a 48V unit that we do not touch; the 12V battery is changed and coded as normal.
Audi Q5The Q5's battery is under the boot floor, by the spare wheel well, and is usually a 70 to 95 Ah AGM depending on engine. Empty the boot before the technician arrives and the job goes much faster.
Audi Q7A Q7 takes one of the largest batteries Audi fits, usually 92 to 105 Ah AGM. It is under a front seat on the first generation and its position can differ on later cars, so we check by chassis number.
Audi A3The A3 is the simple one: battery under the bonnet, usually 59 to 70 Ah in EFB or AGM. It still needs coding on cars with the battery sensor, which is nearly all recent ones.
Audi Q8Most Q8 models are mild hybrids, with a 48V system alongside a large 12V AGM battery of about 92 to 105 Ah. Only the 12V battery is replaced on site, followed by coding and a fault scan.

What we watch for when fitting a Audi battery
- Cars with the battery in the boot have a positive jump post under a red cap in the engine bay. That is where a booster goes, never straight onto the battery through the boot trim.
- The vent tube on a boot-mounted battery is pushed back into the new battery's side port and the unused port is plugged, so gas goes outside the car and not into the cabin.
- Coding records the battery's capacity, type and serial number in the energy management module. Skipping it shortens the life of the new battery and can leave start-stop disabled.
- A power supply stays connected during the swap so the MMI, seat memory and window positions survive, and the electronic parking brake does not log faults.
Audi battery sizes and types
Audi uses European EN case sizes. The A3 usually takes an H5 or H6 battery of 59 to 70 Ah, EFB or AGM. The A4, A6 and Q5 usually sit between 70 and 95 Ah in H6 to H8 cases, AGM on anything with start-stop. The Q7 and Q8 normally take the long H8 or H9 case at 92 to 105 Ah. Capacity can be changed by a step if the tray allows, but then the coding has to be changed to match, so we fit the original figure unless there is a reason not to.

Audi battery help around Al Taawun
In the tower basements of Al Taawun, and in hotel car parks such as Pullman Sharjah or Novotel Sharjah Expo Centre, bays tend to be narrow and many drivers reverse in to the wall. That is the awkward way round for an Audi with its battery in the boot. Say how the car is parked when you call. The technician can power it from the jump post under the bonnet, release the parking brake and ease it forward enough to open the tailgate, then fit and code the battery in the same visit.
Audi battery replacement: FAQs
What happens if an Audi battery is changed without coding?
The car will start and drive, but the energy management module still believes the old, worn battery is fitted. It may charge the new one wrongly, keep start-stop and some comfort features switched off, and store a fault. Coding takes a few minutes with the scan tool and is part of the fitting.
Can an Audi battery be changed in a hotel or tower basement, or does it need a workshop?
It can be done in the bay. Fitting and coding both happen at the car, and the scan tool runs from its own power. The only thing needed is room to open the boot or the door next to the battery, which sometimes means moving the car forward a little.
Does the serial number on the new battery matter for Audi coding?
Yes, because the module only registers a change when the battery data it holds is different. Genuine batteries print a part number, maker code and serial on a label for this. With a quality aftermarket AGM the technician enters the correct capacity and technology and a new serial, and the result for the charging system is the same.
How long does Audi battery fitting and coding take on site?
Usually between half an hour and three quarters of an hour once the technician is at the car for a boot or under-seat battery, and less for an A3. That covers the test, the swap with a power supply connected, coding and a check for fault codes. Clearing the boot beforehand saves time.
