Why does one car battery cost more than another?

Two batteries can look almost identical on a shelf and sit far apart in cost. What you pay for is mostly inside the case: how much lead it contains, how the plates and separators are built, and how many charge cycles the design can survive. A battery for a small saloon with no start-stop has an easy job. A battery for a large SUV that shuts its engine off at every red light on Al Wahda Street, while still running the AC, has a hard one, and it is built accordingly.

The useful question is not which battery costs least, but which is the least costly battery that is correct for the car. Anything below that line fails early and ends up costing more over a couple of years.

How much does battery technology change the cost?

Technology is the biggest single factor. A conventional flooded battery, the sealed maintenance-free type fitted to most cars without start-stop, is the lowest-cost option. An EFB battery uses reinforced plates to give about twice the cycle life, and it sits a step above. An AGM battery holds its acid in glass-fibre mats, is fully sealed and handles deep cycling, and it is the highest of the three.

You do not get to choose freely between them. A car built with AGM has to get AGM back, and an EFB car takes EFB or can be upgraded to AGM. Fitting a standard battery to a start-stop car to save money is false economy: it fails early, and start-stop stops working in the meantime.

Do size, capacity and brand make a difference?

Yes, in that order. Capacity in ampere-hours and cranking power in CCA rise with engine size and electrical load, and a bigger battery simply contains more material. The battery for a large V8 pickup or a luxury saloon costs more than the one for a compact hatchback of the same technology. Case shape plays a part as well, because some less common sizes are made in smaller numbers.

Brand comes next. Makers with long records as factory suppliers to car companies tend to sit higher, and value-focused brands sit lower. The gap between brands of the same size and technology is usually smaller than the gap between technologies. A fresh battery from a mid-range brand is often the sensible middle path.

How do warranty, registration and second batteries affect the quote?

Warranty length is built into the cost of each product line. A range that carries the longer end of our up to 24 months cover is made to a higher specification than an entry range with a shorter term, and it is quoted higher.

Registration does not change the cost of the battery itself, but the cars that need it are nearly always the ones that need AGM or EFB, so the two go together. With us the registration is part of the fitting. Cars with a second battery are a separate case. Many Mercedes models and some Volvo, BMW and Land Rover models carry an auxiliary or support battery. It is small, but it is a specialised part, and it is quoted on its own when the test shows it needs replacing.
