BMW battery replacement in Al Taawun
A BMW takes an AGM battery, typically 70 to 105Ah, mounted in the boot on almost every model. After fitting, the new battery must be registered to the car with a scan tool so the charging system starts fresh. All of this is done on site in Al Taawun: the technician works from the open boot and uses the jump posts under the bonnet when needed.

What we watch for when fitting a BMW battery
- Registration is done with a scan tool once the new battery is connected. If the amp-hours or the type changes, for example flooded to AGM, the car is coded to the new values as well.
- The intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal is fragile. The cable is undone at its bolt and the sensor is never levered or twisted.
- The positive lead carries a safety terminal designed to cut the cable in a crash. It is handled gently and tightened by hand tool, not knocked on.
- Boot-mounted batteries vent through a tube to the outside. The elbow and tube go onto the new battery, and the blanking plug goes into the vent on the other side.
How the battery and charging system work on a BMW
BMW was early to put a brain on the battery. An intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal has measured current, voltage and temperature since the early 2000s on the larger models and across nearly the whole range soon after. The engine computer uses those numbers to manage charging and to cut power-hungry features when reserves are low. It also changes its charging strategy as the battery ages. That is why a new battery has to be registered: otherwise the car keeps charging as if the old, worn one were still fitted.
Signs a BMW battery is on its way out
- An 'Increased battery discharge' message on the screen when you get into the car.
- The clock and date reset themselves, or the car asks you to set them again.
- Start-stop goes quiet and the car switches off comfort items such as seat heating, the powered tailgate or keyless entry to save power.

BMW models we replace batteries for
Tap a model for its battery type, where it sits and what the swap involves.
BMW 3 SeriesA 3 Series usually takes a 70 to 90Ah AGM, depending on engine, on the right side of the boot. It must be registered after fitting, and the small vent tube reconnected before the trim goes back.
BMW 5 SeriesThe 5 Series carries an 80 to 105Ah AGM in the boot on the right. Recent generations with mild hybrid or extra equipment may add a second small battery, which the scan tool reports on separately.
BMW X5The X5 uses a 90 or 105Ah AGM beneath the luggage floor, a heavy lift out of a deep well. The split tailgate has to open fully, so leave space behind the car in the basement.
BMW 7 SeriesA 7 Series takes the largest battery in the range, usually a 105Ah AGM in the boot. With so many control units staying awake, it shows discharge warnings sooner than smaller cars when it only does short trips.
BMW X3The X3 normally has an 80 or 90Ah AGM under the boot floor. Registration is required, and if a previous owner fitted a different size, the car is coded to match what is actually installed.
BMW X6The X6 shares its electrics with the X5 and takes a 90 or 105Ah AGM under the luggage floor. The sloping tailgate swings high, which is worth checking under low basement pipes before the job starts.
Where the battery sits in a BMW
The battery is in the boot: on the right behind a trim panel or under the floor on saloons, and beneath the luggage floor on the X models. That keeps it away from engine heat, which helps in Sharjah, but it means the boot must open and be emptied. If the battery is completely flat and the boot will not release, the technician powers the car through the positive post and earth point under the bonnet first. A car reversed hard against a basement wall has to move forward far enough for the boot lid to rise.
BMW battery sizes and types
Four-cylinder 3 Series and X3 models usually take a 70 or 80Ah AGM in the H6 or H7 case. Six-cylinder cars, the 5 Series and most X5 and X6 models carry 90 to 95Ah in the H8 case. The 7 Series and V8 SUVs often go to 105Ah, the H9. Older BMWs without start-stop left the factory with flooded batteries of 80 to 110Ah. Capacity is printed on the fitted battery and stored in the car, and the replacement should match both. Going up or down a size is possible only with coding.

BMW battery help around Al Taawun
BMWs in Al Taawun spend their lives between tower basements and the queue for Al Ittihad Road. Event weeks are the hard ones. During a big show at Expo Centre Sharjah, such as the book fair each November, the car parks along Al Taawun Street fill up, and drivers sit with the engine off and the screen, fan and lights running while they wait for someone. An AGM battery that is already three summers old does not forgive that. The technician can reach a car in the Expo car parks as easily as one in a residential basement.
BMW battery replacement: FAQs
Does a BMW need battery registration after a change?
Yes, on nearly every BMW built since the mid-2000s. Registration tells the car a new battery is fitted so it resets its charging history. Skip it and the car may charge the new battery wrongly and keep start-stop and comfort features restricted. It takes a few minutes with a scan tool at the car.
Can I go from an 80Ah to a 90Ah battery on my BMW?
You can if the tray takes the longer case, but the car has to be coded to the new capacity, not just registered. Otherwise the charging system works to the wrong numbers. The technician checks the tray, does the coding on site and confirms it has taken.
The boot on my 5 Series will not open because the battery is flat. How do you get to it?
Power is fed into the car through the jump posts under the bonnet, which BMW provides for exactly this. Once the car has 12 volts the boot releases normally. The flat battery is then tested and, if it has failed, changed and registered.
Why does my BMW say 'Increased battery discharge when stationary'?
The car has measured more drain than expected while parked, or the battery can no longer hold what it is given. It is often the first sign of an ageing battery, though a control unit that fails to go to sleep can cause it too. A battery test and a quick drain check tell the two apart.
