BYD battery replacement in Al Taawun

A BYD does not have a starter battery in the usual sense. It has a 12V low-voltage battery that wakes the car, and on many models this is a small lithium iron phosphate unit supplied by the dealer. In Al Taawun we test it where the car is parked, replace it on the spot if it is a standard 12V battery, and otherwise advise and arrange recovery.

Where the battery sits in a BYD

The 12V battery on most BYDs is under the bonnet, often beneath a plastic shroud beside the power electronics, and on some models access is from the boot. Orange cables and anything marked high voltage are left alone. For the technician this is clean work in a basement, but one point matters: a BYD with a dead 12V battery cannot be shifted into neutral in the normal way. If it has to be recovered from a tower car park, the truck crew needs to know that before they arrive.

What we watch for when fitting a BYD battery

  • Only the 12V circuit is tested and serviced. The traction pack, its orange cables and the service disconnect are never opened at the roadside.
  • A BYD must not be used to jump start another car. Its converter and small 12V battery are not built to deliver starter current.
  • When the 12V battery is flat, a booster on the 12V terminals is usually enough to wake the car so the main pack can take over charging.
  • On cars with the lithium 12V battery, replacement is a dealer part and procedure. We confirm the diagnosis, then arrange recovery if the car cannot be woken.

BYD battery sizes and types

There is no single BYD size. Where the car has a conventional 12V battery it is a compact unit, typically in the 45 to 60 Ah range, in either a DIN or a JIS case depending on model and year. Where the car has the 12V lithium iron phosphate battery, that part is specific to BYD and is not something a universal battery replaces. The technician opens the bonnet, reads what is fitted and tells you plainly which of the two you have. A lead-acid battery must never be swapped in place of a lithium one.

How the battery and charging system work on a BYD

Every BYD, plug-in hybrid or fully electric, has two electrical systems. The high-voltage traction pack drives the car and is never touched by a mobile battery service. The 12V system runs the locks, screens, computers and the relays that connect the main pack. If the 12V battery is flat the car will not go to Ready, however full the big pack is. Many recent BYDs use a 12V lithium iron phosphate battery with its own electronics, charged from the main pack through a converter. Some older and hybrid models carry an ordinary 12V lead-acid battery.

Signs a BYD battery is on its way out

  • The car unlocks but the screen stays black and the Ready light never comes on.
  • A low-voltage battery or 12V power system warning appears on the instrument display.
  • The key or phone app stops being recognised after the car has stood through a long holiday.

BYD battery help around Al Taawun

BYDs have become a familiar sight in Al Taawun basements, bought by Dubai commuters who want fewer fuel stops on the Al Ittihad Road run. The 12V battery on these cars rarely wears out from starting. What catches owners out is standing time: weeks parked while travelling, a dashcam wired to permanent power, or the car left switched on in a car park near the Expo Centre. When it will not wake, call before trying a jump from a neighbour's car. A wrong connection on an electrified car is expensive to put right.

BYD battery replacement: FAQs

Can you replace the 12V battery on a BYD in Al Taawun?

Yes, where the car is fitted with a standard 12V lead-acid battery, and we do it at the car with a warranty of up to 24 months. Many BYDs use a 12V lithium iron phosphate battery that is a dealer-only part. In that case we test it, try to wake the car, and arrange recovery to the dealer if it has failed.

My BYD shows plenty of range but will not switch on. Why?

The range figure belongs to the traction pack, and the car needs the separate 12V battery to boot its computers and close the relays that connect that pack. With the 12V flat, the car stays dead no matter how much range it has. A 12V test at the car confirms it in minutes.

Is it safe to jump start a BYD?

It is safe when done on the 12V terminals with the right equipment and polarity, and the aim is only to wake the car, not to crank anything. It is not safe to improvise with cables from another car if you are unsure of the connection points. Never use a BYD to jump start a petrol car.

Do you work on the BYD traction battery?

No. The high-voltage pack is outside any mobile service and belongs with the dealer and the manufacturer's warranty. Our work stops at the 12V low-voltage side: testing, boosting, replacing a standard 12V battery, and arranging a recovery truck when needed.
