What the Tesla Cybertruck takes
As an SUV, the Cybertruck carries a larger battery than a saloon, and the engine bay runs hot in traffic. Larger cases mean more capacity, but they also suffer more from long idling with the AC on.
Older versions of the Cybertruck generally use a standard maintenance-free battery with no registration step, so the swap is quick.
On electric and plug-in models only the 12V low-voltage battery is serviced. The high-voltage drive battery is never opened.
Lead-acid Model 3 and Model Y cars usually carry a compact 45 Ah battery in the Japanese B24 case size, vented through a small hose. Older Model S and Model X cars use a small deep-cycle AGM, usually somewhere between 33 and 45 Ah depending on the year. These are low-capacity batteries because nothing has to crank an engine. Tesla fitting notes that apply to the Cybertruck
- The car is powered off from the touchscreen before the 12V terminal is touched, and a window is left slightly open because frameless door glass cannot drop without low-voltage power.
- On lead-acid Model 3 and Model Y cars the vent hose has to be clipped back onto the new battery, or gas vents under the trim instead of outside the car.
- Running jump leads from a Tesla to another car is a bad idea: its low-voltage system is not built to supply starter current to a petrol engine.
- After a new 12V battery the warning on the screen usually clears by itself once the car has slept and woken. If it stays, Tesla service can clear it.
