MINI battery replacement in Al Taawun

A MINI takes an AGM battery of about 70 to 80 Ah on start-stop cars, or a standard 60 to 70 Ah battery on older ones, and like any BMW Group car the new battery must be registered. Both are done where the car is parked in Al Taawun. The technician fits it under the bonnet or in the boot, depending on the model.

How the battery and charging system work on a MINI

Under the retro styling a MINI is a BMW. It has the same intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal, the same energy management software and the same expectation that a new battery will be registered with a scan tool. Registration tells the car the battery is fresh so it stops applying the charging pattern it had worked out for the worn one. If the capacity or type changes, say from flooded to AGM, the car is also coded for that. Cars with start-stop came with AGM and must stay on AGM.

Signs a MINI battery is on its way out

  • The central display warns of increased battery discharge while the car is parked.
  • Start-stop is unavailable for long periods and the car switches off seat heating or the rear demister by itself.
  • The clock and date reset to zero after the car has been parked for a few days.

MINI battery help around Al Taawun

A MINI is a town car, and around Al Taawun that means short hops: to Al Qasba for coffee, along the Buhaira Corniche, over to Al Majaz Waterfront and back. The energy management on these cars deliberately holds the battery below full charge to save fuel, so a diet of ten-minute drives leaves an AGM battery permanently low. The car then starts shedding comfort functions to protect itself. A longer run on Al Ittihad Road once a week, outside the 7 to 9am and 5 to 8pm jams, does the battery real good.

What we watch for when fitting a MINI battery

  • Registration is done through the diagnostic socket straight after fitting. It takes a few minutes and resets the car's battery statistics.
  • The scuttle cover over the battery on the Hatch is held by fragile clips. They are released by hand, not prised, so the cover seals again against water.
  • A vent hose runs from the battery to outside the body on boot-mounted cars and is moved across to the new battery.
  • After a full power loss the clock, date and sometimes the one-touch windows and sunroof need initialising, which is done before handover.

MINI battery sizes and types

Earlier petrol MINIs without start-stop generally use an L2 or L3 flooded battery of 60 to 70 Ah. From the introduction of start-stop, and across the current range, the usual fitment is a 70 Ah L3 AGM, with an 80 Ah L4 AGM on higher-powered and well-equipped cars such as the Cooper S, John Cooper Works and larger Countryman. The capacity stored in the car's computer should match the battery fitted, so the technician reads it with the scan tool as well as checking the label.

Where the battery sits in a MINI

On the three and five-door Hatch the battery is under the bonnet, tucked at the back of the engine bay beneath a plastic scuttle cover that has to be unclipped first. The later Clubman and Countryman, which share their platform with small BMWs, normally carry it under the boot floor instead. Neither is difficult, but each needs space: the bonnet up for one, the tailgate or barn doors open for the other. In a basement, leaving a metre behind a Clubman makes the work far easier.

MINI battery replacement: FAQs

Does a MINI battery have to be registered like a BMW?

Yes, on second-generation cars onward. The MINI uses BMW's battery sensor and charging logic, so the car must be told a new battery has been fitted. We do it with a scan tool at the car, straight after the swap.

Why does my MINI reset its clock after standing for a few days?

The clock loses its memory when voltage falls very low, typically while a weak battery is cranking the engine. It is one of the earliest signs that the battery can no longer hold its charge. Have it tested before it leaves you stuck.

Can I upgrade my MINI from a standard battery to AGM?

You can, and it suits short-trip use in Sharjah heat. The car then needs coding for the new battery type as well as registration, so the charging voltage is right for AGM. Both are done on site.

Is the battery in the boot or under the bonnet on a MINI Countryman?

On the first-generation Countryman it is under the bonnet, and on the later one it is normally under the boot floor. The technician confirms it in a minute at the car. Either position can be worked on in a tower basement.
